Traffic Design with a new mural in Gdynia. It is by the SKM station

The new mural was created on the initiative of Traffic Design and OPEC. It decorated the wall of the OPEC building by the SKM Gdynia Leszczynki station. Its message is simple – it is intended to promote pro-environmental attitudes.

The District Heating Company (OPEC) produces and supplies heat to the residents of Gdynia and nearby towns. The mural at the SKM station is the latest result of the company’s collaboration with Traffic Design. Previously, the collaboration included installations of retro recycled tiles on the heating chambers, as well as conservation work on a bas-relief by Gdynia-based sculptor Irena Loroch.

The new mural has a simple aesthetic. The painting carries a message about the environment and responsibility for common space. Interestingly, the mural was made using mineral paints that absorb carbon dioxide as they dry and are based on natural pigments. The mural was designed by Renia Maj, who made the industrial installation of the building part of the work. Elements of the installation were incorporated into the mural as a three-dimensional form.

The largest part of the mural is a bee, which is also the symbol of OPEC. The company has been supporting pollinating insects for years – it has its own apiaries and produces honey.

OPEC has a number of facilities and pieces of infrastructure at various points around the city. This is an opportunity for us to promote valuable topics and make a positive contribution to the aesthetics of Gdynia,” says Wojciech Folejewski, President of OPEC.

It is important to us that the artistic forms appearing in the public space also carry socially relevant content. Ecology is one of the key issues today – also for cities that have to deal with the consequences of the climate crisis,” adds Michał Lech of Traffic Design.

An additional curiosity is one of the chimneys belonging to OPEC. It is inhabited by a pair of kestrels, which are raising several chicks. OPEC posts photos of the kestrels on its website.

The work was done by artists: Andrew Bastrikin, Serhai Rusak, Ivan Fiaskou, Sebastian Choromanski.

Don’t let the editor’s profile picture fool you. No one has hacked our website! The LEGO brand encouraged us to celebrate Children’s Day in a unique way. We changed the profile pictures of our editors, taking us back to the blissful time of childhood 😊. The cursor in the desktop version, which turned into a LEGO block for a few days, is also a variety. This version of the website will accompany us until 1 June. This year, on the occasion of Children’s Day, the LEGO brand prepared a special action with the Slowhop platform, as part of which it filled 21 houses across Poland with LEGO bricks sets and gave those willing to participate the opportunity to spend a weekend of creative play in them. We wrote more about this action HERE and HERE.

PS and if you are looking for ideas for a LEGO set for creative play then check out our suggestions HERE. These are good gift ideas, not just for Children’s Day!
