Unsweet Ciocho in Katowice. The place for delicious coffee and breakfast

The ‘Unsweet Ciocho’ lunchbar and breakfast room is a space where contrasts adorn the interior. Here, the raw trapezoidal sheet panelling reflects light like jewellery, emphasising the texture of the material and creating an unexpected sheen. Above it, the exposed walls show traces of time passing – brick, plaster and old construction fragments that seem to tell the story of the building. Already at the entrance, one senses that this is a different place from all those so far known to the Katowice gastronomic scene.

In the design by architects from the Brokat studio, austerity meets elegance. On one side of the interior, a steel grating introduces industrial chic, while opposite it stands a bar clad in dark veneer. Its golden, aged mirrors cast shimmering reflections, while the brass tabletop shines like liquid metal glass, giving the entire space an aura of luxury.

The lighting is a masterful dance of two worlds. The long, geometric luminaires are reminiscent of industrial halls and harmonise perfectly with the sharp contours of the grilles and trapezoidal lamellae. At the opposite end of the spectrum, there are crystal chandeliers in a classic form, and wall sconces reminiscent of seashells – charming details that warm up the interior and bring a vintage feel to it.

The colours are another piece of this surprising puzzle. The bottle green of the patterned tiles on the floor creates a sense of depth, and comfort was taken care of by placing the seats in a mint shade. The upper wall area is dominated by yellow grooved tiles, which harmonise perfectly with the fragments of rough paint in the same tone. This duo of green and yellow brings energy and invigorating optimism to the interior.

The vintage details are the icing on the cake of the “Unsweet Cioch”. An old, ornate table made of wood tells of long family gatherings, while chairs styled on school benches evoke warm memories. An ornate glass pane, which was once hidden by a sideboard at our grandparents’ home, adds a slightly sentimental touch to the interior. These carefully selected finds introduce a sheen of elegance and soften the geometric austerity.

As a result, the architects at Brokat have managed to create an interior that balances two aesthetics – ascetic minimalism and a fascination with glamour. Every detail, from the shimmer of the brass countertop to the softness of the mint-coloured sofa, works together to create a cohesive yet contrasting atmosphere. ‘Unsweet Ciocho’ is not just the perfect place for breakfast, daytime coffee or lunch. It is a place that celebrates the moment and reminds us of the past of the entire townhouse.
