UTU: The Universe of Theatre and Mind. A cultural platform in Warsaw

The UTU Theatre and Mind Universe is a unique place where the art of theatre meets modern arts education. We offer acting classes and workshops on theatre architecture and wellbeing, led by experienced experts who are committed not only to imparting specialist knowledge but also to creating a safe and inclusive atmosphere.

At UTU, you will see performances resulting from the workshop work of our students and the creative output of artists collaborating with our institution. Our headquarters are located in a historic townhouse at 3 Inżynierska Street in Warsaw.

Behind UTU are two people: architect and patron of the arts Mirosław Nizio (Nizio Design International, Galeria Nizio, Fundacja Nizio) and actor and founder of the Alternative Acting Studio, Sebastian Słomiński. Since 2024, they have been working together to create a space that combines artistic visions with professional experience, developing a new dimension of arts education in which we place the individual at the centre, alongside a safe and holistic creative process.

UTU Youth Stage

The UTU Youth Stage is an initiative created by Universum Teatru i Umysłu, aimed at giving a voice to young artists who do not have their own space to present their performances. At UTU, we believe that authentic theatre is born of courage, experimentation, asking questions and addressing personal, important and sometimes non-obvious topics.

We create a safe and open space for debut productions, performances, recitals, and musical, puppet and theatre projects, both individual and group-based. It is a place where young theatre can be raw, imperfect, yet sincere and full of life.

As Sebastian Słomiński, actor and co-founder of the project, says : “As an actor, I know how difficult it is to stage your own play or recital, especially in Warsaw. Independent venues have their schedules filled up long before the end of the season, and institutional theatres do not accept external projects because they do not need to – they produce a huge number of events themselves and are self-sufficient in this regard. That is why, together with Mirosław Nizio, we created the UTU Youth Stage to open up to young artists.”

The UTU Youth Stage is also a community of creators and audiences who meet at the UTU venue to experience, inspire and develop together. We create everything through our own efforts. We do not rely on external funding, and our space is available to young artists free of charge so that they can present their work to a wider audience.

Performance description: The profession of an actress

A profession is ‘a learned occupation carried out for financial gain’.

Disappointment: ‘a painful feeling experienced when one’s expectations or plans are not fulfilled, e.g. romantic disappointment’.

Young women – why do they want to be actresses? They reply that from a very young age they felt they were born for it… At the age of five, they dress up in their mother’s dresses, put on high heels that are too big for them and, holding a deodorant like a microphone, act out various characters – mainly from television. A few years later, they join the drama club run by their Polish teacher. They play in Cinderella, Rapunzel, Snow White… of course, always the lead role. In secondary school, things get more serious – they join the Amateur Theatre. There are competitions, showcases, applause and that one member of the jury (an actor, of course) who tells them they should apply to drama school because they have what it takes… or rather, I think he used the word ‘potential’. And so begins the great adventure of life known as the acting profession. And what happens next…?

The aim of the play’s creator is to stimulate reflection and discussion on the contemporary challenges and state of the acting profession in the context of current social realities and the dynamics of Polish theatre management. ‘The Profession of an Actress’ is a very personal story about the increasingly frequently raised issues of the realities and culture of artistic work.

Concept and performance: Krzysztof Gomółka-Pawlicki

Script and directorial consultation: Marek Brand

Running time: 75 mins.

The monodrama is being staged as part of the UTU Young Stage project. UTU Young Stage is an initiative of Universum Teatru i Umysłu, created for young artists embarking on their artistic careers. Its aim is to create a safe and open space for the presentation of debut plays, performances, recitals and theatre projects.
