Victory Square in Gryfice to be redeveloped. It will be green!

Victory Square in Gryfice will be beautiful! A competition to redesign this main town square has just been awarded, and the winning entry promises a dramatic improvement in the use of the space and more greenery. The change is intended to move away from the dominance of concrete paving and create a more resident-friendly place.

Gryfice Victory Square – competition results

on 20 November 2025, the results of a competition organised by the Municipality of Gryfice in cooperation with the Koszalin branch of the Association of Polish Architects were announced. Twenty-four design proposals were submitted. The jury evaluated them during a two-day session at the West Pomeranian Business School and selected the concept by the Gąska-Wojcieszak Pracownia Architektoniczna Sp. z o.o. studio from Poznań. The award amounted to PLN 60,000. The team consisted of Łukasz Gąska, Mirosław Wojcieszak, Kornel Kuzański, Marta Sowińska-Gąska, Teresa Bączkiewicz and Katarzyna Woźniak.

Jury assessment

The jury drew attention to the apt link between the existing space of the square and the new solutions. The designers introduced a large number of plantings, which was an important expectation of the residents. The concept was considered to be a proposal that enhances the comfort of use of the square and relates respectfully to its current layout.

Transformations by Gąska-Wojcieszak Pracownia Architektoniczna

The focus was on the need to bring the square back to the people of Gryfice. The existing space functioned as a vast, fully paved slab, which created a so-called heat island and did not encourage people to stay longer. The winning project envisages a marked increase in the proportion of greenery to improve climatic conditions and create a more friendly meeting place. The authors envisaged a gradual transformation of the current development. An interpretation of the existing condition was adopted that allows the existing pavement pattern to continue in a revised and expanded form. The solution is not based on a complete change, but on the development of the current values.

Recycling of materials and division of space

Much of the concrete paving that has already been used in the square will be retained. The elements that need to be dismantled will be used for new paving. The design was based on resource management in a way that reduces waste.
The square has been divided into two distinct zones outlined along an east-west axis. The first is the square plate, which has a representative and utilitarian character. It has been adapted for the organisation of public events and is compositionally based on the relationship between the county hall and the community centre. The second is a green square that will provide a recreational zone with alleys and resting places. Both spaces are linked by a layout with a fountain and a planned pergola. In addition, the location of a new pavilion is proposed at the northern edge of the square.

Zwycięstwa Square in Gryfice and its role in the town’s layout

Gąska-Wojcieszak Pracownia Architektoniczna paid attention to the relationship between the square and the public buildings located in its vicinity. The new layout emphasises the role of the district office and the cultural centre in the composition of the space. From a city-wide perspective, the reconstructed square was considered an important point of order in the layout of the city centre. Directions for further urban development were proposed on an east-west axis to facilitate the linking of the centre of Gryfice with the recreational areas along the Rega River.
