Warsaw: first trees appear on Marszałkowska Street

Green Marszałkowska is taking shape! On the night of 9/10 December, eight elm trees appeared there, and in the following days the number of new trees will increase to as many as 115. The planting of these magnificent specimens is being carried out on both sides of the tram tracks and will eventually create a clearly green central belt.

Initially, the project envisaged 101 elm trees. However, after a re-analysis of the space on Marszałkowska Street, it was possible to designate additional spaces and extend the scope of the project by a further 14 trees.

The Fiorente vines that were selected for this project will ultimately reach a height of around 25 metres and a crown width of 6 to 10 metres. In the future, they will form a dense vault over the roadway and the tracks, which will translate into effective shade during the warmest months of the year. This variety has a more spreading silhouette than the trees with a columnar habit that usually appear in the capital, so the designers of the green avenue envisage a very impressive effect. Because of the tram traffic, the work is being carried out at night. This is possible thanks to the organisation of the works in cooperation with Warsaw Trams. Under the newly planted trees, there will be cuttings of glossy iris and perennials in subdued colours, which will bring order and variety to the entire composition of Marszałkowska Street.

Green Marszałkowska in Warsaw

Further visible changes will appear on the section between Królewska and Świętokrzyska streets. In the coming weeks, 44 silver lime trees will be planted there to complement the existing rows. The species has been selected in accordance with the recommendations of the Warsaw Greenery Board. When all the planned plantings on the eastern side of the street and at the Museum of Modern Art, the Dmowskiego roundabout and Central Square are added together, the Marszałkowska traffic axis will have as many as nearly 500 new trees. Such a large scale of the undertaking makes it one of the largest greenery projects in the entire city.

Winter tree planting

Planting is carried out in late autumn and December, as this is the most favourable period for these plants. The trees then go dormant, which reduces stress and gives them time to root safely before the arrival of spring. Conditions are favourable as long as the ground remains unfrozen.

Green Marszałkowska in the New Centre of Warsaw

The appearance of greenery along Marszałkowska Street is part of a larger programme of new development in the City Centre. Investments in recent years have changed the way many places in the centre are used. The new Central Square has transformed former parking spaces into an attractive space with alleys and abundant greenery. A similar transformation has taken place in the so-called Five Corners Square and in Chmielna and Bracka Streets, which now have a much friendlier function.
