A key stage of the investment, the new tramway terminal in Warsaw’s Stegny district, has just been completed. This Saturday, 28 June, the first tram, line 19, will set off on the newly created section of track in St. Boniface Street, providing the inhabitants of Lower Mokotów with a direct rail link to the centre of the capital, including the railway station.
The construction of the new tram infrastructure has been carried out with funding from the European Funds. Track has already been laid along the route, and the first carriage ride tests were carried out in May. Once the installation of the catenary network has been completed, it will be possible to open the route to passengers, which will take place this coming weekend.
The preparatory work also included safety and operational activities. Less than a month ago, Warsaw Trams held an exercise involving all technical and supervisory teams. During the simulation, procedures for, among other things, restoring track passageways, removing faults and running traffic in emergency conditions were tested. Cooperation between the network, trackside, crane and specialist Unimog ambulance units was also tested, as well as the actions of traffic supervision instructors.

The new tram line no. 19, which will be launched simultaneously with the commissioning of the terminus, will connect Dolny Mokotow with the Central Railway Station and Jana Pawła II Avenue. The section being commissioned is part of a larger project involving the construction of a route to Miasteczko Wilanów. In autumn, the area around the new tram route will be landscaped with greenery. Dozens of trees and several thousand shrubs are planned to be planted.
The investment is being carried out as part of the project ‘Construction of a tram route to Wilanów along with the purchase of rolling stock and associated infrastructure – Phase II’. The total cost of the project is more than PLN 2 billion, of which 900 million comes from EU funding under the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment 2021-2027 programme.
