Warsaw Wawer is another station that has undergone a metamorphosis. Previously, the stops were made available for passengers: Warszawa Grochów, Warszawa Olszynka Grochowska and Warszawa Gocławek.
The PKP PLK company has completed another stage of reconstruction work. Between Warsaw East and Warsaw Wawer, agglomeration traffic was separated from long-distance traffic thanks to the addition of two additional tracks. This measure will improve the movement of trains.
Work was carried out to renovate the old stops for passengers. New infrastructure was also built to facilitate access to the platforms. The last metamorphosis was carried out at the Warszawa Wawer station. During the modernisation of this stop, the railwaymen preserved the historic basalt paving blocks that once adorned the platforms. After it was cleaned and sandblasted, the cube was reused. Now it can be found in the middle strip of the platforms and at the exit of the subway.
Other historic elements can be found in the subway. There you can see historic tiles that have been juxtaposed with new ones. The shape and colour of the latter are intended to refer to the original solution. The tiles contrast with the new terrazzo floors, which have been recreated to resemble the historic ones. A valuable detail is the recreated wooden handrail.
The reconstruction of the bus stops was carried out taking into account the guidelines of the conservation officer.
Travelling by rail in Warsaw combines modernity with respect for the city’s heritage, as can be seen from the stop in Wawer. It was originally built in 1936 as part of the Otwock-Grodzisk line and was destroyed, along with the tunnel, during World War II. Between 1959 and 1961, it was rebuilt with special care for the original elements. Recently, the original tiles and basalt paving from the 1930s were secured and re-installed, highlighting the care taken to preserve the historic character of the site, says Marcin Dawidowicz, Mazovian Regional Conservator of Monuments.
Several new pedestrian crossings were also built during the reconstruction of the entire section between Warsaw East and Warsaw Wawer. Some of them lead through the tracks and some in underground tunnels.
