Weekend home in Bohemian Paradise – harmony of architecture and nature

On the picturesque outskirts of Hrubá Skála in Český Ráj (a tourist region in northern Bohemia, located northeast of Prague), a modern weekend house was built that combines traditional architecture with modern design. The design was created with a view to harmony with the surrounding landscape and respect for the historical context of the area, which is part of a protected landscape.

The house was built on a gentle south-facing slope that offers exceptional views of the Bohemian Paradise panorama. It is surrounded by both historic and modern houses, creating an interesting architectural mix. The building’s design draws inspiration from local traditions, exemplified by the use of a gabled roof – typical of the region. However, its modern, elongated and curved form gives the structure a contemporary feel. The plan of the house resembles an open ‘V’, which not only maximises views of the surrounding countryside, but also fits perfectly into the limited shape of the plot. In particular, the designers have ensured that their design is a natural extension of its surroundings, which emphasises its connection to nature.

Entering the house from the north side, one can immediately enjoy the expansive views to the south, where the ruins of the medieval Trosky Castle can be seen in the background. The living spaces, such as the living room, children’s room and bedroom, have been oriented to provide unobstructed views of this picturesque landscape. In addition, the terrace extends the interior of the house outwards, creating a space conducive to relaxation. The construction of the house uses materials that combine tradition and modernity. The main structure of the building is made of CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) panels and the roof is supported by a wooden truss. The basement, necessary for storage and technical installations, was built with concrete blocks and its external walls are lined with local stone.

The biggest challenge of this project was the unstable, sloping plot, which for years had been considered unsuitable for development. To overcome this, the house was founded on eighteen 800 mm diameter piles, a real technical feat. The weekend house in Bohemian Paradise is a perfect example of combining traditional values with a modern approach to design. The architects have created a space that is not only aesthetically stunning, but also fits into the natural and cultural context of this protected area. The house offers tranquillity and comfort while celebrating the beauty of the surrounding nature.
