The final stage of work is underway to transform the platform hall in Bytom. The ruined platform canopy is now clean, illuminated by natural light and will welcome rail visitors to the city with dignity.
The work is being carried out as part of the redevelopment of railway line No. 131. Work on installing a new roof covering over the platforms at Bytom’s railway station has been completed. The structure gained glazed skylights and lamps that will illuminate the facility at night. The platform hall also gained navy blue “Bytom” led signs, which were hung on both sides of the hall. Their size and design were agreed with the Provincial Conservator of Monuments. The lettering is a direct reference to the former neon signs adorning the station hall.
The platform hall of Bytom’s railway station was built in 1929. Its condition at the time is well reflected in the photograph from December 2020, which we publish below. During the works, the hall’s structure was reinforced, an anti-corrosive coating was applied, rafters were assembled and boarding was carried out. The new roof sheathing is made of zinc-titanium sheeting. The work was carried out by PORR.
In total, the new zinc-titanium sheet roofing covers 5,600 square metres. Under the roofing are the three railway platforms that are being rebuilt. Importantly, their surface will be decorated with the original design. In accordance with the decision of the conservation officer, the arrangement of the tiles in a diamond pattern has been retained. New benches and information boards have already been installed on the platforms.
All works related to the reconstruction of railway line No. 131 in Bytom are to be completed in 2025. The work is being carried out with financial support from the EU Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment.
