The redevelopment of the northern section of Solidarności Avenue and Leszno Street, between Jana Pawła II Avenue and Okopowa Street in Warsaw, has just been completed. The modernisation covered over 1 km of road and has resulted in a new cycle route, a revamped carriageway and pavements, and a significantly greater amount of greenery along the entire length of the street.
The redevelopment of Solidarności Avenue and Leszno Street has been completed
One of the outcomes of the redevelopment is the creation of an asphalt cycle path. The route runs along the northern side of Solidarności Avenue and Leszno Street, forming the missing link between the infrastructure on Jana Pawła II Avenue and Okopowa Street. As a result, cyclists now enjoy a much more convenient journey from Bemowo towards the city centre. A section of Leszno Street was also rebuilt, with car traffic diverted to a previously unused part of the carriageway. This made it possible to preserve most of the trees growing there.
More space for pedestrians and smoother transfers
Changes have also taken place on the northern carriageway of Solidarności Avenue, where the number of traffic lanes has been reduced from three to two. Parking spaces have been moved from the pavements onto the road, allowing the full width of the pavements to be restored. The junction with Żelazna Street has also been rebuilt. New cycle crossings and additional links have been created to make it easier for cyclists to get around. Public transport passengers will notice the change thanks to the relocation of bus and tram stops to the western side of the junction, which shortens the distance when changing services.
Dozens of new trees and 14,000 square metres
However, it is the new greenery that makes the biggest impression! As part of the works, 59 trees were planted, including 26 elms, 15 alders, 12 cherry trees and 6 chestnut trees. Among them, shrubs and perennials have been planted, covering a total area of around 14,000 m². The new plants include, amongst others, euonymus, cotoneaster, spiraea, ground-cover roses, asters, spiraea, coneflowers, sage and tulips. The project was carried out by Strabag on behalf of the Municipal Roads Authority, and the investment was worth approximately 12.8 million zlotys. However, this is not the end of the story. The city has announced that work will continue on further sections of Solidarności Avenue, along with the development of cycling infrastructure in this part of Warsaw.
