Comprehensive renovation work has just been completed on two Danzig townhouses in Wrzeszcz. Neglected for many years, the buildings at 1 Pniewskiego Street and 7 Jaskowa Dolina Street are unrecognisable. As part of the work, they received refreshed facades, restored architectural details and new utility functions. The investment was carried out by Gdańskie Nieruchomości.
Both tenements were built at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The corner building on Pniewskiego Street represents an example of eclecticism with a characteristic brick façade. The neighbouring house at Jaskowa Dolina, plastered and more subdued in form, draws heavily on Baroque and Classicism. Both have lost much of their original charm over the years, including being stripped of ornate balconies and some gables. After decades of neglect, they were in need of a major renovation to repair their poor state of repair and restore their historic character.
The eagerly awaited renovation work, preceded by the drawing up of a conservation work programme, began in June 2023 and lasted until the beginning of May 2025, during which time a comprehensive restoration was carried out on both townhouses, which look as they did more than a century ago. The buildings received renovated facades, their damaged stucco was restored, as well as bands around the windows and doors, which were restored to their former pattern. From now on, the townhouses are also decorated with cornices. Thanks to the availability of archive photographs, it has been possible to reconstruct in detail the former verandas, which had to be demolished due to decades of neglect.
The interiors of the historic buildings also underwent extensive modernisation, but the spirit of history was kept in mind. As part of the work, the gateways, corridors and staircases were renovated, with attention paid to the age-old details and design elements of these spaces. The townhouses were also enriched with modern building management systems, as well as lifts. Their construction increased accessibility and comfort for future tenants. In the renovated tenements, 16 commercial premises were created, which the city will use as offices and headquarters for social organisations. The investment was carried out by Gdańskie Nieruchomości as part of Integrated Territorial Investments. The cost of the works amounted to almost PLN 26 million, part of which was covered by EU funds.
