Casa GD

Where geometry meets nature. Contemporary solids in dialogue with the Portuguese landscape

Located in the picturesque urban area of Torres Novas, the Casa GD project is an example of contemporary architecture that subtly combines form, function and landscape. The large plot of land of more than 2 hectares on which the building is located provides the ideal backdrop for an architectural concept at the heart of which is the dialogue between interior and exterior.

The body of the building is distinguished by its clean geometry and minimalist aesthetic. The large openings in the facades give it lightness, visual permeability and open up the space to the surrounding landscape. These carefully placed gaps are not just functional – they define the abstract identity of the house, allowing contemplation of key elements of the surroundings: the nearby Torres Novas Castle, the city skyline and the natural park of Serra de Aire. The body of the building rises towards the east, naturally leading to the main entrance. Upon crossing the threshold, the attention is drawn to the atrium, which frames the view of the historic fortress, creating a sense of continuity between inside and outside.

Central to the design is the courtyard, which plays a key role in the organisation of the space. It separates the communal and private areas while providing natural lighting and ventilation. The east-facing patio guarantees the privacy of the users and also allows light and air to flow freely in spaces such as the kitchen and bathrooms.

Casa GD was designed with two types of spaces with different functions in mind. The living room is the centre of social life, offering panoramic views of the landscape. The kitchen, closely connected to both the living room and the courtyard, promotes the integration of residents and guests. In contrast, the bedrooms and the office provide intimacy and tranquillity. Thanks to careful arrangement, these spaces remain functionally separated from the common areas. The courtyard acts as an intermediary between these two zones, giving the project a harmonious balance between openness and privacy.

The building integrates naturally and respectfully with the local landscape. Its contemporary form subtly dialogues with the historical and natural context of the site, creating a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The interiors are maintained in an elegant, subdued style, emphasising the timeless architecture of the house.

Casa GD is an example of architecture that combines modern solutions with a deep understanding of the surrounding landscape. Its minimalist form, strategically designed spaces and harmonious dialogue with its surroundings make it a unique home that not only responds to the needs of its occupants, but also celebrates the beauty of the place in which it is built.
