The competition to find out what the expanded Wielkopolska Oncology Centre in Poznan will look like has ended. It is an extension of the existing building. The novelty will be a connecting link, which will connect the new building with the old one and will run a few metres above Garbary Street.
The competition was conducted by the Association of Polish Architects, Poznan branch, and commissioned by the Wielkopolska Oncology Centre. Its aim was to select the best design for the building of the Ambulatory Oncology, Prevention, Molecular and Imaging Diagnostics building. The investment will be carried out on Garbary Street in Poznań.
Participants in the competition had to take into account the creation of a link between the new building and the existing hospital. For this reason, all the projects submitted feature an over-ground footbridge over Garbary Street. This is an architectural element that will definitely stand out among the buildings on the street.
The decision to choose the best project was made by the following architects: Zbigniew Maćków (Chairman of the Competition Jury), Mikołaj Stępień, Wojciech Krawczuk, Michał Kozielewski, Piotr Sobczak and Joanna Bielawska-Pałczyńska, Małgorzata Żmijewska-Tomczak, Bartosz Pawłowski and Piotr Kamiński. A total of 12 projects were received by the competition organisers. The jury decided to award three prizes.
First place was awarded to the concept by architects from the Warsaw studio WXCA, prepared in collaboration with Archimed. The Jury awarded the first prize for: the best integration of the building into the complex spatial context, the correct scale and form of the building, the use of a multi-pitched roof corresponding well to the historical surroundings, very good functional and usable solutions for the entrance area and the lobby, a logical and intuitive scheme of communication in the building, timeless and elegant architecture appropriate to the function and rank of the building, high sensitivity to the needs of future users – both patients and staff, a successful attempt to limit the impact of the footbridge on the spatial relationships and view axes (especially from the side of Św. Marii Magdaleny Street).
First place – WXCA concept:
Second place was won by the concept by ZOA Architects. The Competition Jury awarded the second prize for: the proper relationship with the immediate surroundings achieved by shaping all elevations as windows, clear separation of the paths of the adult and child patients, referring by the height of the base to the neighbouring, historic sports hall, the rationality of the adopted economic solutions.
Second place – concept by ZOA Architekci:
The third place went to the proposal of the NM architekci Tomasz Marciniewicz office, created together with Zuzanna Szpocińska Marciniewicz, Jerzy Grochulski and the Format Jacek Wisniewski design studio. The members of the Competition Jury liked this concept: an interesting way of shaping the entrance area in the undercut of the mass from the side of St. Maria Magdalena Street, good functional solutions for the upper storeys of the building taking into account the opening towards the St. Francis Seraphim Church, and a proposal for the development of the area intended as a reserve for the second stage of the bunker.
