With a modernist soul. School sports hall in Bohemia

Its design was prepared by Peter Sticzay-Gromski of the Grido architekti studio. The modernist sports hall is located in Řevnice in the Czech Republic. Its white walls and curved shape are reminiscent of modernist solutions from the early 20th century.

The architects’ task was to design a sports hall for primary school pupils. The building is intended to be used not only during school hours, but also in the evenings, when the facility can be used by sports clubs and the town’s community. The hall was built on the site of the former tennis courts between the school and the community centre.

The hall’s external dimensions of 45x25x10 m had to be placed in a dense, residential part of the town, but in such a way that it did not dominate the built environment. For this reason, the architects chose rounded corners that made the building appear smaller.

The entrance to the hall from the street is marked by a multifunctional wing. This section is located to the east of the hall so as not to obstruct the view from the windows of the school rooms on the ground floor and houses the changing rooms, the so-called clubhouse and the boiler room. This space has been designed without suspended ceilings with exposed technical equipment.

In order to ensure the functionality of the sports hall, the architects made it possible to divide the space using grids with an opaque lower section. This makes it possible to separate three smaller gymnasiums. Each Gymnasium can be accessed directly from the corridor, so as not to interfere with classes in other sections. Each gymnasium has its own lower and upper seating area and lockers. The result is a sports hall that is perfectly sized and functional to meet the needs of the local community.
