With a retro feel. A small flat in Bielsko-Biała

When working on this interior design project, architect Monika Kubica sought to draw inspiration from the city itself. She aimed to highlight its effortless elegance, create soft Art Nouveau lines and a pleasant ambience. The result is a flat in Bielsko-Biała which, despite its limited floor space, fully meets the residents’ needs.

The interior design is versatile. All it takes is to place a few personal items here, and change the accessories from time to time to give the space a new character.

Every personal item added emphasises the character of the interior, and flowers from a nearby meadow look best in a vase. “This is exactly the kind of authenticity we were looking for,” says the designer, Monika Kubica from Jasno studio.

Functionality was equally important. This is a place to live, so it must allow for comfortable cooking, entertaining guests or relaxing. In order to accommodate as many functions as possible, the designer decided to remove the partition wall between the bedroom and the living room and install sliding glass doors. This made the interior brighter. From the living room, you can see two windows, which creates a sense of space. The former entrance has been replaced by a rounded corner wardrobe and a recess with a desk, highlighted by wallpaper featuring an abstract pattern.

The flat in Bielsko-Biała now has an atmosphere that encourages slowing down and celebrating everyday life. The living area has become its heart. Life centres around a wooden table with a café-style feel, which invites you to linger. This piece was brought over from Belgium. Restored and fitted with new veneer, it will serve future generations. Classic bentwood chairs with Viennese wicker seats have been placed around the table.

“I like their unpretentiousness and their neat, soft shape. And when tucked under the table, they don’t take up much space – this was a key consideration in the design,” adds the interior designer.

The table’s distinctive form stands out interestingly against the lighter, blue-and-cream kitchen units. A characteristic feature of the latter is the brass extractor hood. Another attractive feature is the rounded edge of the kitchen units, which brings to mind old sideboards.

The designer took a contrasting approach to the bathroom. It is the only separate room in the flat. This small but functional space is adorned with onyx-effect tiles, a striking mosaic on the floor and an angular mirror. The look is completed by a geometric vanity unit with a row of brass knobs.
