In a 72 sq m flat in Warsaw, architects from the Estimental studio proved that bold interference with the functional layout can completely change the character of an interior. Changing the existing layout is almost a trademark for the team — they rarely leave the layout in its original form. In this case, they also decided on far-reaching transformations to create a space perfectly suited to the needs of the owners and their two cats.
Initial analyses showed that the original layout of the four-room flat did not suit its future users. The architects therefore decided to completely reverse the functions: they gave up one room, significantly enlarged the living area, moved the kitchen and created an additional wardrobe, separated from the bedroom. The result is an interior with an unusual layout, dominated by an open, multifunctional space.
The division of this part of the flat is not based on walls, but on precisely designed built-in furniture. It is this furniture that organises the interior without detracting from its lightness. The gallery-style living area combines the functions of an entrance hall, kitchen, dining room, wardrobe and living room. Subtle spatial divisions and glass, openwork partitions allow users to perceive the flat as a single, coherent whole, while at the same time enjoying several intimate corners with different characters.
The interior aesthetics can be described as soft modern with a distinct mid-century twist. Warm shades of red, coral and terracotta appear in the details, and when combined with small square tiles, wooden fronts and smooth flooring, they evoke the spirit of the 1960s and 1970s. This is a conscious reference to the era, which does not dominate, but subtly guides the stylistic narrative of the entire project.

The kitchen has been treated in a way that differs from the classic annex. It is accessed from the hallway and opens onto the living room. A large mirror above the worktop reflects the living area, visually enlarging the space and enhancing the impression of depth. The investors were particularly keen to play with form and reflections, which create non-obvious spatial relationships. A delicate structure made of powder-coated steel and reinforced glass subtly closes off the kitchen, while also providing a frame for its composition.
Most of the furnishings were custom-made according to the design of the Estimental studio. Tarkett carpeting was used on the floor, the focal point of the lighting is the iconic Lexavala lamp, and the bar stools are from the Polish brand Górna Półka. The Omnires Switch tap in the kitchen is a noteworthy feature, allowing convenient switching between mains water and filtered drinking water.
The living room has a more atmospheric character. An additional mirror breaks up the typical division of the façade, and paintings by the owner of the flat hang on the walls, giving the interior a personal touch. Atmospheric lighting warms up the space, and the furnishings include items from renowned manufacturers, including noo.ma — among others, the iconic Swirl blanket and Nokk bench.

The bathroom has been divided into wet and dry zones, connected by an elegant, narrow arcade. Unusual furniture gives it character and ceases to serve only a practical function – it becomes a distinctive stylistic element. The whole is complemented by a Venus lamp from Nodi Studio and natural CE:SI Ceramica tiles in the shower area.
The hallway serves a dual purpose: it is both a space for displaying the owner’s paintings and a place where numerous utility solutions are hidden. The built-in furniture on the right-hand side includes a washing machine, dryer, laundry area, utility cupboard and wardrobes for outerwear.
The last area of the flat is the bedroom, which has a warmer, more intimate atmosphere. The washi effect on the walls, paper lamps and subtle custom-made furniture create an atmosphere conducive to relaxation. In this space, attention has also been paid to details that build the coherence of the entire design.
