Wrocław: a new tenement house will be built on Kuźnicza Street

The University of Wrocław is preparing for a major investment in the heart of the city. A tender has just been announced for a contractor to build a new building at 29b Kuźnicza Street. The building will become the headquarters of the Polish-Ukrainian Cooperation Centre and the Institute of Musicology at Wrocław University. The opening of bids is scheduled for mid-May 2025. In the meantime, the architectural design of the future building is already known.

In 2022, the university received special treasury bonds from the Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland worth a total of PLN 110 million. Part of this sum – PLN 30 million – was earmarked for the construction of a new building on the site of the iconic Kalogródek pub. The aim of the Polish-Ukrainian Cooperation Centre will be to develop scientific contacts between Poland and Ukraine and to support the rebuilding of the teaching potential of Ukrainian universities. The new building will also become the seat of the Institute of Musicology. The Wrocław-based Pracownia Architekt S.C. J. Modlinger, M. Wołyniec is responsible for the project. The cost of preparing the documentation was approximately PLN 530,000, of which PLN 150,000 came from an earlier project created in 2019.

The new building is planned as a modern, multifunctional academic centre. The building will not only house lecture and seminar rooms, but also a specialist library with an extensive phonographic collection. The most important element, however, will be a professional concert hall, designed with excellent acoustics in mind. It will be used for both teaching and artistic purposes and will enable concerts, musical events and scientific conferences to be organised. The investment is expected to contribute to the artistic development of students, strengthen interdepartmental cooperation and increase the presence of the University of Wrocław in the cultural life of the city.

“The entire investment will be implemented taking into account the principles of sustainable development, modern architectural standards and accessibility for people with disabilities, creating a multifunctional and inclusive academic environment,” – emphasises Damian Mroczynski, UWr deputy director responsible for the investment. Construction work should begin in the summer of 2025 and take around two years. The remaining PLN 80 million from the bonds received will be used by the University of Wrocław to build the Centre for Physical and Chemical Research.
