Wrocław: at Lelewela 10, lavender has blossomed. It is the effect of renovation

Spectacular townhouses from the 19th and early 20th centuries are a great asset to Wrocław. However, the buildings have been neglected for years, and today, thanks to systematic renovations carried out by city institutions and housing communities, they are once again blooming like beautiful flowers. One such building is the house at 10 Lelewela St. The grey building has recently been given a new lavender colour scheme, a rather unusual choice in the capital of Lower Silesia.

History of the tenement house at 10 Lelewela Street in Wrocław

The tenement house at Lelewela 10 was erected in 1873. The building fits in with the landscape of the Świdnickie suburb, whose expansion coincided with the period of the city’s dynamic industrial development. The renovation, carried out in the spirit of modernism in the 1930s, led to the removal of most of the previous decoration from the facade of the building. The originally elegant and richly decorated façade became flat (apart from the bay window) and austere. The building is listed in the municipal register of historical monuments and is under the protection of the conservation officer, but has not undergone major renovation for many years. Until now.

The scope of the renovation at Lelewel 10

In 2025, a full renovation of the monument was carried out, including the roof, the façade from the street and the courtyard, and the balconies. The involvement of the housing community and the Municipal Assets Board made it possible to restore the form of the 1930s façade. At the same time, the choice of a very bold and unique colour combination made the building stand out in its surroundings. The work was carried out in cooperation with Admex, which manages the property. The cost of the investment was approximately PLN 730 000. ZZK participated in the financing because of its shares in the community.

Renovation of the tenement’s facade

Before the renovation, the facade of the tenement was dirty, visually uninteresting and did not attract the attention of passers-by, at least not positively. After the renovation, expressive colours appeared, based on blue-violet tones in the upper parts and a yellowish ochre in the ground floor, while the window and gate bands are now beige. This peculiar combination has added intensity to the building’s massing and made the monument look striking despite the passage of almost 100 years since its construction. The residents emphasise that the renovated façade has a fresh look and clearly emphasises the modernist features of the building.

Renovations of Wrocław tenements

The conservation work has translated into an improvement in the living conditions of tenants and the aesthetics of the Lelewel Street space. As Aleksandra Lipertowska, a representative of the Municipal Resources Management Board, emphasises, the renovated roof and elevations improve the safety and comfort of users. The renovation at 10 Lelewela Street is part of a larger programme of renovations to the city’s properties. Other quarters are being modernised in parallel, including the area of Przedmieście Oławskie under the management of Wrocławskie Mieszkania.
