Wrocław continues the revitalisation of the Sackler Bastion. A tender for the second phase of works has been announced

The Wrocław Municipal Investment Board has announced a tender for the second phase of the modernisation of the Sackler Bastion, one of the city’s most important monuments. Following the completion of the first phase of works, which included the colonnade and the perspex pavilion, it is now time for further measures to raise standards and make this historic site more accessible.

The second phase of work will focus on improving the site’s infrastructure and accessibility. Particular attention has been given to two main tasks: the restoration of the historic toilet building and the upgrading of the alleyways leading to the top of the hill. This task includes the redevelopment of the historic toilets building, designed in 1897. The toilets will be brought up to modern standards, taking into account the needs of people with disabilities and parents with young children. Aesthetics have also been taken care of – the interior decoration is intended to evoke the atmosphere of more than 100 years ago. In addition, the wall behind the building will be restored and the stairs and railings in this part of the bastion will be modernised. The path leading up to the toilet building will be fitted with new lighting and railings with handrails, increasing safety and comfort for users.

The second task of renovating the Sackler Bastion includes a comprehensive upgrade of the paths, walkways and accesses on the hill. The work will include resurfacing the top of the hill, the installation of new lighting and CCTV. Special attention is also being given to the restoration of the concrete base and granite steps of the former gloriette building. The north and south paths leading to the summit will be upgraded with new paving, lighting and railings with handrails. Small architectural features such as benches, litter bins, bike racks and an information board will also be installed.

The second phase of the works is scheduled to take approximately eight months from the signing of the contract, which should take place in September/October 2024. It is worth bearing in mind, however, that the Sackler Bastion is a listed building and the works will be carried out under the close supervision of a conservation officer. During the first stage of revitalisation, previously unknown rooms under the colonnade and the remains of an unknown fountain were discovered. It is possible that, even now, the building will reveal further historical secrets that may affect the schedule of works.

The Sackler Bastion, renovated as part of the first phase of works, which cost the city more than PLN 30 million, is already delighting residents and tourists. The opening of a café and a planned restaurant are attracting visitors, and the whole is becoming an increasingly popular meeting and leisure destination. The city of Wrocław does not intend to stop there. As Mayor Jacek Sutryk emphasises, the aim is to create a real architectural gem that will become the pride of the city and a favourite place for residents and visitors.
