Wysoka 4 in Wrocław: the tenement house will flourish once again

At Wysoka 4 in Wrocław, the long-awaited renovation of a historic tenement house from the early 20th century is about to begin. The building stands out for its rich neo-baroque decoration and exceptional luck, as it is the only one of its kind to have survived to this day. The contractor for the renovation has just been selected, so work will start any moment now. The investment is financed by the city and will cost over PLN 2 million. The entire project is to be completed before the end of the summer.

Wysoka 4 – a pre-war remnant

The historic tenement house at Wysoka 4 is an exception in this part of the estate. It is the only building on the west side of the street that was built before World War II. The others were destroyed or demolished during the post-war reorganisation of the city. Wysoka 4 is currently a detached tenement house, visually distinct from its surroundings, but very neglected. The upcoming renovation is intended to change this unattractive image and restore the building’s original aesthetic. The Municipal Property Management Board in Wrocław has confirmed that a contractor has already been selected and the schedule assumes that the work will be completed by September 2026.

Neo-Baroque full of detail

The greatest asset of the tenement house is its neo-baroque front façade. The sculpted wall boasts, among other things, figures supporting balconies, cartouches, floral and geometric ornaments, as well as elaborate cornices and bay windows. The balconies also have decorative balustrades. The whole of this magnificent composition has been exceptionally well preserved, considering the age of the building and its history. Nevertheless, the monument needs renovation in order to flourish again. Before any work can begin, stratigraphic tests must be carried out to determine the original colour scheme of the tenement house. Preliminary assumptions suggest a light beige colour.

Wysoka 4 – scope of work and cost of investment

The work will cover all the walls of the building. First of all, the sophisticated façade, including the balconies, will be renovated. The side elevations and the courtyard wall will also be renovated to match the front. Work is also planned on the roof and attic. An important element of the investment will also be the installation of damp-proofing to protect the building for years to come. The total cost of the project is estimated at approximately PLN 2.1 million. Once the renovation is complete, the tenement house at Wysoka 4 is set to once again become a great ornament of the transformed neighbourhood, reminding us of the splendour of pre-war Breslau.
