In the heart of Zakopane, near one of its oldest and most charming streets – Kościeliska Street – the ‘Our Home’ Family Support Centre was built. The modern building designed by the POLE Architekci studio fits harmoniously into the local landscape, combining the Zakopane style and its traditional elements with the functionality of contemporary architecture. The wooden facades, light-coloured roof and subtle woodcarving details emphasise the reference to regional aesthetics, while giving the building a unique, friendly character. It is a place that not only serves the local community, but also enriches the architectural landscape of the city.
Reconstruction respecting the tradition of the Zakopane style
The project involved the almost complete demolition of the existing building, which had previously served as a bank and furniture shop. The building did not meet the aesthetic, historic or functional requirements for a healthcare centre, which necessitated such a far-reaching modernisation. The outline of the single-storey exterior walls and the distinctive gable motif were retained, while the ceiling and roof were demolished, allowing two storeys to be added within the roof volume.

The building was designed in a simple, classic form, referring to local architectural traditions presenting the Zakopane style. The facades were made of wood and the roof was covered with bright metal sheets, harmonising with the neighbouring buildings, including the former Catering Technical Secondary School at 14b Kasprusie Street. Geometric woodcarving details and carved window glyphs emphasise the contemporary interpretation of the style.
Functionality and modern solutions
The building has been designed with full functionality and accessibility in mind. A central staircase and lift allow easy movement between all floors. The ground floor of the building houses service units, a rehabilitation clinic and technical rooms, including a heating substation. The first floor is used for doctors’ offices, a psychologist’s office, a space for a support group and a warehouse for rehabilitation equipment. The second floor has administrative and social rooms and a library. In addition, bathrooms adapted to the needs of people with disabilities are provided on each floor, ensuring comfort and convenience for all users of the building.
Mission of the Family Support Centre
The ‘Our Home’ Family Support Centre is a place to improve the quality of life of people struggling with serious illnesses and their loved ones. A team of specialists – doctors, nurses, psychologists, physiotherapists and volunteers – will offer comprehensive support, covering somatic as well as psychosocial and spiritual aspects.
The Centre’s activities focus on alleviating suffering, treating pain, supporting patients and their families through difficult times and providing care based on empathy and understanding. “Our House” is a space that combines modernity with local heritage, responding to the needs of the community in a unique setting of Zakopane’s charm.
