Zielona Szczytnicka. This street in Wrocław is set to undergo significant changes

More shade, more comfortable pavements and a dedicated space for cyclists. ‘Zielona Szczytnicka’ in Wrocław is designed to make life easier for local residents and make everyday journeys between the tenement blocks more pleasant. The redevelopment concept was unveiled on 23 September 2026 – the renderings clearly show an increase in the number of trees and shrubs. However, we will have to wait a little longer for this project to be realised.

Green Szczytnicka. More greenery amongst the tenement blocks

The upcoming changes concern the section from Skwer Bocheński to Reja Street, as well as the square at the junction of Szczytnicka, Polaka, Ładna, Reja, Nehringa and Skłodowska-Curie Streets. This will no doubt be most welcome news to those who, on hot days, are on the lookout for even a patch of shade. Trees are to be planted on the northern side of the street, whilst shrubs will be planted on the southern side. Some of the hard surfaces will give way to greenery, so a stroll along the historic and contemporary tenement blocks should become more pleasant. Stylised street lamps will be fitted to complement this predominantly historic setting. It is precisely such changes at pavement level that can make people want to take a leisurely stroll down the street, rather than simply rushing past it.

Szczytnicka for pedestrians and cyclists

Szczytnicka is also set to become more convenient for everyday use. The pavements will be rebuilt, and lowered kerbs will make it easier for people with reduced mobility and parents with pushchairs to get about. On the south-facing side, a dedicated, two-way cycle lane will be created. Cyclists will therefore have their own route, without having to ride amongst cars or use the pedestrian area. The carriageway is also due for refurbishment, whilst the tram tracks will retain their concrete surface featuring an embossed pattern of historic cobblestones. This green transformation does not, therefore, mean the disappearance of all hard surfaces, but rather a more sensible division of the space.

The project was developed following discussions with local residents

An important part of the redevelopment will be the relocation of the Reja tram stop towards Reagan Roundabout, opposite the stop serving the opposite direction, towards Wyszyńskiego Street. This will free up space for a cycle path. The chosen option was decided following public consultations, a citizens’ forum and a walk with road users. Residents highlighted safety concerns, the condition of the pavements and a lack of greenery. Cars will still be permitted on Szczytnicka Street, though its future layout is designed to allow for further traffic restrictions should the city decide to implement them.

Green Szczytnicka. When will the redevelopment take place?

The concept was presented to residents on 23 September 2026. Now, a less spectacular but essential stage lies ahead of the project: the preparation of detailed documentation. Wrocławskie Inwestycje has announced that a tender for its preparation will be launched within a few weeks, and the final design is due to be completed in 2028. Only then will it be possible to prepare the tender process for the construction work. There is therefore no confirmed completion date for the redevelopment as yet. However, the direction of the changes is already clear: more space for greenery and a more user-friendly street for those who use it every day.
