Can construction be photogenic? Aleksander Malachowski proves that yes

Can a city be admired solely on the basis of old and new buildings? Can construction itself stimulate the senses and evoke aesthetic impressions? What details can be seen during the construction phase of an investment? At Skanska’s invitation, Aleksander Malachowski, Hashtagalek – architectural photographer, Master of Arts, answers these questions. The effects of their collaboration can be admired at a newly opened photo exhibition in Warsaw.

In a series of 12 works, Aleksander Małachowski rediscovers the ongoing construction of the Studio A skyscraper on Prosta Street in Warsaw, where office floors have just begun. This is the first collaboration of its kind between Skanska and Hashtagalk, which not only shows the construction phase from a completely different point of view, but above all brings out its photogenic qualities. In the author’s photographs, we can see geometry depicted in the idea of minimalism, patterns and unconventional perspectives accompanying the erection of Studio A.

This has been a truly fascinating adventure for me. It was not the first time in my career that I tried to find beauty where no one sees it, but it was the first time that this place was a construction site. For a while, I swapped traversing the streets for walking on the construction floors, and admiring the skyscrapers piled up around my head for observing the rebar. The most intriguing views for me turned out to be those of Warsaw from the perspective of the construction site. In this way, I found the contrasts that have been an important part of my photography for a long time,’ says Aleksander Małachowski, architectural photographer and co-founder of the ProjektFotografia.pl photography course.

I am proud of the results, as I have once again proved to myself that seeing is the most important thing in urban photography – not just looking. What matters is sensitivity to detail and hidden shapes. I cordially invite you to admire the exhibition,” the photographer continues.

The photographs were taken at the construction site of the skyscraper, which is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2025. The building with an office and retail profile will have 26,600 square metres of space, 27 above-ground and four underground floors. The planned height is 105 metres.

An open-air exhibition of Hashtagalka photographs can be seen from 29 March on the patio of the Studio office complex. The entrance is from Łucka Street, between the Norblin Factory and the Studio B building.
