Painting – the golden medium of art. Exhibition at MOCAK

Painting is a contract between the vision of a painting and the hand. Here content, meaning and beauty can be conjured up. But when the hand does not feel the idea or when it is technically clumsy, the image is distorted. An exhibition showcasing MOCAK’s collections will launch on 27 October and run until March 2024

In this exhibition – in four themes – we are showing paintings from the MOCAK Collection that demonstrate the apt agreement between hand and image. These works once publicise and once silence the subject. Painting is a versatile medium

A study of things and words. Painting influences the meaning of the object and the meaning of the word. On the surface, everything looks the same, but in reality it is something different, something new. Something much richer

Man. Art is always a story about a person, because the work helps you to see yourself and others. This applies to all art, but where the human figure appears, it is clearer, because painting can publicise one feature and mute others

Scenes from life. We are indifferent to what is going on around us. But painting is able to give validity to everyday scenes. It also knows how to show – or rather bring out – their symbolic nature

The density of reality. We tend to notice only fragments around us. The dream of a wider view manifests itself in art with ‘total’ attempts to see everything that is important. This kind of dense “almost realism” – common in early art – is still a useful tool
