The BIG studio designed for BoConcept. The result is the furniture collection “Nawabari”

Danish design meets Danish architecture. BoConcept has partnered with global architecture studio BIG – the Bjarke Ingels Group – and is launching the unique ‘Nawabari’ collection. The collection will go on sale in March 2024.

The concept for the collection, led by BIG Products head Jakob Lange, was inspired by the Japanese art form of rope tying, which aims to establish interpersonal bonds. “Nawa” means rope in Japanese, and the term “Nawabari” in translation translates as stretching a rope.

When we started working on the collection, we were looking for a new way of expressing and representing the forms of the furniture. We were interested in the lines that are created when a material is bound by a rope. The result is sculptural, organic shapes that form the core of the entire furniture family ,” says Jakob Lange.

Combining the simplicity and elegance of BoConcept with BIG’s forward-thinking aesthetic and sense of designing for a purpose, Nawabari is designed to connect people and transform shared spaces. BIG is always exploring the connections between work, life and play, which means their contemporary designs are just as impactful in a hotel lobby or art gallery as they are in the home or workplace.

Collection “Nawabari”

Nawabari consists of two sizes of sofa, an armchair, two coffee tables and two sizes of poufs. The collection can be set up individually as distinctive pieces or grouped together to create a self-contained, cohesive space.

The collection can be customised to suit the needs of any project. In addition to the full range of exclusive BoConcept fabrics, it will also be available in the Gabriel Group’s Blend upholstery: with a wool effect in six predefined colours that beautifully enhance the sensual design.

Sustainability

Sustainability considerations and considerations are truly built into the Nawabari design. The sofas, armchair and pouffes are Greenguard certified for the Blend fabric (available soon). This certification ensures that the products have low chemical emissions and a low impact on indoor air quality. The Blend fabric also has the EU Ecolabel and the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certificate, which means that every ingredient has been tested for the existence of harmful substances.

Proving the collection’s appeal, Ingels chose Nawabari to showcase it on several floors of BIG’s new flagship headquarters in Copenhagen’s Nordhavn harbour. This huge space with an industrial feel, symbolising the design power of the city, was also the setting for the global BoConcept x BIG photo campaign.
