A book for a bag of rubbish is definitely one of our favourite campaigns, which both promotes reading and encourages people to reach for books and supports the environment by removing rubbish from our surroundings. The campaign will cover 16 cities this year. The reward for participating in the event is unique: a clean neighbourhood and something to read!
“A book for a bag of rubbish” is a social cleaning action initiated in 2019 by Anna Jaklewicz, archaeologist, educator and travel writer. Its participants clean up forests, river banks, city parks – all those places that need intervention due to litter. A gift and a thank-you gift for registered participants of the event are books.
I brought back many beautiful memories from my travels, but also a sad picture of a littered, human-destroyed world. I devoted several chapters of my book on Indonesia to environmental issues. Even after its publication, instead of just complaining, I decided to act – that is, to organise community clean-up campaigns. How could I thank those who helped me clean up? By giving away books to them! This formula has already proven itself since the first ‘Book for a Bag of Rubbish’ campaign, so I am happy to announce a call for volunteers for the next edition ,” says Anna Jaklewicz.
The ‘Books for a Bag of Rubbish’ campaign will be held for the twenty-first time, and nationwide it will be the fifth edition.
on 16 September, more than 1,000 books will be waitingfor participants in 16 cities: Warsaw, Krakow, Łódź, Wrocław, Poznań, Gdańsk, Katowice, Szczecin, Bydgoszcz, Lublin, Olsztyn, Białystok, Opole, Rzeszów, Gorzów Wielkopolski and Kielce. They will be given to those who are the first to register and then take part in the joint clean-up
If you want to join the action, go to our website www.ksiazkazaworeksmieci.pl or find the event on Facebook of the action, select the city you are interested in and fill in the registration form. There you will also find all the details concerning the action. At the action’s collection points in Warsaw, Opole, Katowice and Łódź, our strategic partner will talk about recycling of electrical and electronic equipment, batteries and packaging ,” explains the action’s organiser
Registration started on 27 August and will continue until the places are filled. The organisers are providing 50 books for adults and 20 for children in each city, a total of as many as 1120 valuable publications. This year, the choice of books will be wide – participants will mainly be offered Polish reportages, travel literature, guidebooks and detective stories
The event itself, however, is not about the prize, which is symbolic. It is about a clean environment, promoting social involvement and shared responsibility for the state of our planet. And about the wonderful power of teamwork ,” adds the campaign’s initiator
The strategic partner of the campaign and its sponsor is ASEKOL PL – Organizacja Odzysku Sprzętu Elektrycznego i Elektronicznego (Electrical and Electronic Equipment Recovery Organisation) and Organizacja Odzysku Opakowań S.A. (Packaging Recovery Organisation)
So far, around 2,800 people have taken part in all editions of the ‘Books for a Bag of Rubbish’ campaign and more than 100 tonnes of rubbish have been collected
