It has happened. The Landscape Resolution in Gdynia has come into force!

The regulations adopted by the councillors took effect from Thursday 12 October. The Landscape Resolution in Gdynia is intended to facilitate the fight against illegal advertising and ugly banners. Similar regulations are already in place in Gdańsk, Krakow and Poznań

The landscape resolution in Gdynia regulates the location of billboards and advertising devices, fences and small architectural objects. The regulations were previously published in the Provincial Official Gazette

The time is coming when we will put in order the advertisements in public space in our city, including wild advertisements, which have so far escaped the regulations in force. Thanks to a resolution adopted by city councillors, we finally have a tool to not only clean up the landscape in sensitive places, such as at the intersection of Zwycięstwa Avenue and Wielkopolska Street, which is literally flooded with advertisements, but we will also be able to watch over any new media appearing in the city space. We will notice the effects, i.e. an aesthetically pleasing, coherent public space, relatively quickly,” said Marek Łucyk, Deputy Mayor of Gdynia for Development

This means that from Thursday, all new advertising media appearing in the city will have to comply with the guidelines of the landscape resolution. On the other hand, media that were previously placed within the city will have to be adapted to the new rules. In the latter case, however, there is a transitional period of one year. In this way, officials have given businesses time to adapt their old media to the new requirements

Gdynia officials have divided the city into two zones. The first covers areas of particular importance in terms of landscape, historical and spatial value – additional restrictions have been introduced here. In the second zone, regulations were introduced limiting the number of advertising media, regulating the proportions of advertisements in relation to their surroundings and indicating guidelines for their quality

Landscape resolutions began to be introduced in Polish cities because of the chaos in public space. Although colourful, illegal advertisements still exist, local authorities have learned to combat them effectively. The aim is to improve the townscape, from historic areas in the centre to residential neighbourhoods, industrial areas and recreational areas. It is hoped that similar regulations will begin to take effect in other cities, also at the level of smaller counties and municipalities
