Maja Ganszyniec has collaborated with BMW. She designed a modular furniture set

The designer of furniture and utilitarian objects has created a unique object for BMW, which acts as a display stand for the brand’s electric models. The stand consists of modules and is made of natural materials. In the future, the set will find its way into urban spaces, where it will serve as a recreation area. The development of a set with universal functionality is an example of the brand’s holistic approach to sustainability.

Concern for natural resources manifests itself not only in reducing carbon emissions, using renewable materials or recycling. Responsible design that extends the life of products and minimises waste is essential. This is the principle Maja Ganszyniec follows in her design work. The utilitarian objects she creates are preceded by an analysis of the production process and the desire to create beautiful objects that will last as long as possible. The life cycle of objects can be extended by, among other things, repurposing them. This is understood by the BMW brand, which is committed to its goals of reducing carbon emissions and developing a closed-loop economy. This manifests itself, among other things, in using vehicles at the end of their useful life phase as a source of raw materials for new cars.

At BMW, we want to set new standards through innovation and a holistic approach to sustainability. We have beenanalysing the entire value chain for many years. We are acting in this regard in multiple ways – 100 per cent of the electricity we use comes from renewable sources and all BMW plants areCO2-neutral. In addition, we are increasing the use of recycled materials in our latest models and developing alternative materials with properties similar to leather or made partly from recycled fishing nets and ropes – says Kacper Studencki, BMW Marketing Director in Poland.

As part of the co-operation, Maja Ganszyniec designed a modular display stand for electric BMW models. The individual elements were made from natural materials. The designer chose weather-resistant spruce, stone and metal. The furniture set is decorated in some places with natural vegetable-tanned leather – these are the handles that make it easy to move.

The cooperation with Maja is natural for us – we share a conscious approach to using available resources and looking for innovative solutions in the area of the circular economy. For us, it does not end with the production of cars, but enters the life in which we function on a daily basis,” adds Kacper Studencki.

A well-thought-out design was central to the whole concept. The stand is made up of modules that allow them to be repurposed. In the future, the set will gain a second life and become an outdoor recreation area with benches and greenery. The wooden structure will look good in a park setting, and the natural materials from which it was built will allow the set to be renewed or recycled.

All the elements of the stand have been designed as outdoor furniture – simply unfolding them will allow them to be used as picnic platforms or deckchairs. The versatility of the modules will allow them to be freely combined and adapted to current needs ,” says Maja Ganszyniec.

For years, the designer has realised projects that are designed to respond to human needs, are nature-friendly and are based on traditional craftsmanship. Reaching for natural materials and a holistic approach to sustainability are no longer a curiosity, but a necessity. The display stand for the BMW i models is just one example of this approach in design.
