More than 1,000 km of cycle routes will be created in Mazovia

This is part of the so-called EuroVelo system, a network of cycle routes running through countries in Europe. An agreement has just been signed, thanks to which as many as 1,100 km of cycle routes will be built in the Mazovian Voivodship.

In the first instance, 550 km of routes will be built. Ultimately, the network will connect Warsaw with the Łódzkie, Warmińsko-Mazurskie, Podlaskie and Świętokrzyskie voivodships.

The investment will be carried out with the support of the Mazovian Regional Assembly, which has set aside PLN 11 million for this purpose. The routes will run through the cities of the voivodeship and will connect with others in neighbouring voivodeships.

The project’s premise is that they should run as collision-free as possible. The trails are to run, among others, along flood embankments or railway lines, which will allow them to be linked with public transport. The parameters of the paths will be adapted to serve both tourist and transport functions. Inorder to make local trails a convenient alternative to other means of transport,” says Mazovia Voivodeship Board Member Janina Ewa Orzełowska.

First, a programme concept will be developed, which will determine the target route of the routes. The concept is also to specify solutions that will allow them to be built quickly. On Monday 12 February, the provincial government signed two agreements. The first concerns the route along the Vistula (110 km) and on the Kozienice – Radom – Świętokrzyskie voivodeship line (95 km). The realisation of this section is to cost PLN 2.3 million.

The second contract is for the route along the railway lines – from Warsaw to Żyrardów and the Łódzkie Voivodeship (approx. 60 km), the route from Warsaw to Ciechanów and the Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship (approx. 100 km) and the route from Warsaw to Siedlce and the Podlaskie Voivodeship (approx. 150 km), as well as the first section of the route from Warsaw to Radom along the Warsaw-Radom railway line, the section to Piaseczno, connected to the route along the Vistula (approx. 35 km). The cost of the contract is PLN 3.6 million.

We will still have to wait to ride the new routes. Officials estimate that a concept is to be created within a year of signing the contracts. Construction projects will then be prepared and implementation will begin.

The routes implemented by the provincial government will be part of the EuroVelo network – tourist routes of international importance.
