More than half a million zlotys – that’s the fine for the parish for destroying trees in the cemetery

579 600 zł. This is the fine for the Roman Catholic Parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Stanowice, imposed by the Mayor of Strzegom for destroying more than 50 trees in the local cemetery. The fate of the lime trees was claimed by the FOTA4Climate Foundation

The way trees are handled in Poland has become a topic of controversy for years. Excessive pruning of branches and the crown leads to significant weakening or even death of the tree. According to the Nature Conservation Act, dead or broken branches can be removed. It is also possible to carry out work to maintain the crown shape of the tree or to restore the statics of the tree. The removal of more than 30% of the crown is damaging to the tree, and more than 50% of the crown is damaging to the tree

In spite of such clearly formulated regulations, there is a constant occurrence of radical tree felling. A disgraceful example is the situation that occurred in the spring at the parish cemetery in Stanowice (municipality of Strzegom). The lime trees growing there were completely stripped of their branches, which undoubtedly qualifies as plant destruction. The sight is horrifying, especially when one looks at archival photographs of the cemetery. Representatives of the nature conservation foundation FOTA4Climate decided to intervene in the case. They applied for an administrative fine for the felling of the trees. A few months later came the decision of the mayor of Strzegom imposing an administrative fine of PLN 579,600 on the Roman Catholic Parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Stanowice. pLN 173,000 is to be paid immediately, while the remainder of the amount has been deferred for a period of five years, due to the trees’ ability to remain viable. As the foundation emphasises, with such actions it wants to give a clear signal to the perpetrators of the damage that, regardless of the legal status, they will not be tolerated or accepted. The parish is not commenting on the whole affair
