Polish company Baleen and their glasses designed with a passion for architecture

Baleen is a Polish family brand of sunglasses created out of a passion for what is beautiful – art, architecture and film. Maria, Tadeusz and Maciej, who create Baleen, have combined their sensitivity and experience in these fields to offer a timeless product of the highest quality and thoughtful design

The Baleen eyewear collection is created with attention to every detail – nothing here is accidental. The form is inspired by architecture, sustainable production is maintained, and the signature details and 22 carat gold are impressive, while the original dedicated case is hand-stitched in Poland from soft Italian leather. All models are manufactured and finished by hand in France, Italy and Japan

The glasses are produced in limited editions from Mazzuccheli acetate. What is hidden under this mysterious name? Acetate is made from plant fibres sourced from recycled materials, making it a biodegradable material. Its Italian manufacturer, the Mazzucchelli brand, specialises in traditional craftsmanship and has more than a century of experience

However, what distinguishes Baleen products most is their form. Here, too, the creators reach for non-obvious inspirations. Behind each model and its name, like in a film, there is a specific story and architecture that we are encouraged to discover

The De Young model is inspired by the bold structure of a San Francisco museum. Taitō, which is one of Tokyo’s neighbourhoods, and more specifically the pavilion of architect Hiroshi Nakamura was used to create the model of the same name. Central Park – here it may not surprise anyone that it is a New York park, but it is surprising to see the translation of the nearby Guggenheim Museum designed by Frank L. Wright into a setting for classic, yet unusual spectacle frames. Bolzano, meanwhile, draws on the bold architecture of Zaha Hadid in Italy’s Trentino region, and with Quatre Carreres we are transported to a Valencian neighbourhood characterised by soaring architecture

If one feels the lack of sunny places, the retro design of Niterói will symbolically allow one to take a trip to Brazil and the design of Oskar Niemeyer. But that’s not all – Baleen’s range includes the Dirickz model, a minimalist frame inspired by a modernist villa in Rhode-Saint-Genèse, or Montjuïc, inspired by an architectural icon, Barcelona’s Mies van der Rohe pavilion
