The “Lovers of Kamienna” sculpture has returned to the wall of the renovated building

“Lovers of Kamienna Street” is a sculpture that was created in memory of Agnieszka Osiecka. After restoration, the work was returned to its original place.

The re-unveiling of the ‘Lovers of Kamienna Street’ sculpture took place on 7 December in Lodz. The bas-relief is located on the wall of the building at 2 Włókiennicza St. Its return is connected with the thorough renovation of the entire street and the buildings located there.

The bas-relief was designed by Wojciech Gryniewicz. Its first unveiling took place on 25 June 2004 in Łódź. The sculpture was created in an unusual form – the artist made it with an irrigation system, thanks to which the sculpture worked like a fountain. In this way, it refers to the depicted couple of people who are hiding from the rain.

The lovers of the title are characters from the poem The Lovers of Kamienna Street. On the sculpture, one can see the orthalion coat with which the pair of lovers cover their heads. Made of bronze, the sculpture has a special sprinkler in the upper part, which releases a mist. This mechanism has been programmed to activate for five minutes each day. The sculpture bears the refrain of a song.

Today it is the only monument in Poland commemorating the song of Agnieszka Osiecka.

I am very moved. I know that for my mother Lodz was a special place. This is an important moment for all Łódź people. Their beloved sculpture will once again adorn the façade of the tenement house,” said Agata Passent, the artist’s daughter, during the recent unveiling of the sculpture.

Agnieszka Osiecka studied at the Łódź Film School between 1957 and 1962. During her studies, she directed an etude entitled Słoń [The Elephant], which was based on a short story by Sławomir Mrożek. Osiecka also received training on the set of Andrzej Wajda ‘s Innocent Sorcerers. She wrote the songs Kochankowie z ulicy Kamiennej and Okularnicy in the 1950s in Łódź.
