The planned investment was announced by the Municipal Sports and Recreation Centre in Łódź. The Palace of Sport, i.e. the sports hall located at Ksiazza Skorupki Street, will be renovated and adapted to modern needs. The works will take place under the care of the conservator of monuments.
The former Palace of Sports in Łódź is entered in the Municipal Register of Historical Monuments. The facility was built 67 years ago and today does not meet the requirements we expect from sports investments. After changes, it is supposed to be more user-friendly and energy-efficient. So far, we have only learned about the conceptual plans, which include the thermal modernisation of the building. The building will have a new roof, a connection to the district heating network and will use renewable energy sources. There will be new, energy-efficient lighting.
The restoration of the historic skylights and roof windows will allow light to be provided to the main floor, and this will help reduce energy consumption. Upgrading the ventilation and placing it inside the building will improve the comfort of those training in the hall. Theinstallation of renewable energy sources will provide us with independence and energy security, and contribute to the optimisation of operating costs,” reads a statement by Iwona Safjanowska, deputy director of MOSiR, published by łódź.pl.
The Sports Hall, also known as the Palace of Sports, was built in 1957. Its design was made by Włodzimierz Prochaska of the Gdańsk University of Technology, assisted by Kamil Lisowski. The modernist building was designed in the spirit of socialist realism. The building is surrounded by a colonnade, which is intended to be a majestic feature. The facility was one of the first in Poland to have an artificial ice rink. Games were organised here as early as 1957.
In later years, the facility was used in a variety of ways. It was used for concerts, cinema screenings, congresses, etc. In total, the venue has a capacity of 9,000.
The renovation work is expected to cost PLN 25 million. The city wants to apply for EU funding. Officials assume that the renovation will be completed by the end of 2026.
