New railway station in Koluszki. Construction starts

The railwaymen have shown what the new railway station in Koluszki will look like. Compared to the previous one, it will be much smaller, but instead it is to be modern, environmentally friendly and adapted to the needs of people with disabilities

The station in Koluszki will be built as part of the Station Investment Programme. The design documentation has been co-financed from EU funds, while the construction work will be carried out from the company’s own resources. A so-called Innovative System Station will be built in Koluszki. It is a facility unified in terms of functionality, of which the railways have already built dozens in Poland

The new station in Koluszki will be built in a new location – on the side of the main entrance to the station beyond the platforms. According to the project, it will be a building in harmony with the industrial surroundings of the railway infrastructure. It will have a simple body, with architectural concrete and red ceramic brick used on the façade. Spacious glazing will add lightness to the building. The project also includes a reminder of the historical Koluszki railway station building – the north elevation will feature an image of the former station in the form of one way vision film applied to the glass. This first station, remembered with nostalgia by the older inhabitants of Koluszki and by history enthusiasts, was built in 1865 by the Łódź Factory Railway, but it also served passengers of the main line of the Warsaw-Vienna Railway, which ran through the Koluszki junction. From 1885 it also welcomed travellers on the Deblin-Dabrowa Railway towards Skarżysko-Kamienna. The project to build a large central station for these three railways did not materialise, and the too-cramped building was supplemented with wooden barracks. Eventually, the station was demolished after 100 years of existence, and in its place a modernist station pavilion, modern for the time, was erected. Years later, however, it had become too bulky and its energy efficiency, resulting from earlier building solutions, left much to be desired. With this in mind, the Polish State Railways (PKP) decided to build a new building that would better meet travellers’ expectations and environmental requirements

Inside the new station building there will be a station waiting room, space for ticket offices, toilets and a small commercial space. A clock tower and a covered walkway from the station to the subway entrance are also planned just outside the station building

The station building and its surroundings will be adapted to the needs of people with reduced mobility, including passengers with disabilities. Architectural barriers will be removed and improvements will be made, including, among others, guided paths, Braille signs and disabled-accessible toilets

The new facility is expected to be environmentally friendly and guarantee a sense of security. In order to optimise water, electricity and heat consumption, a BMS (Building Management System) will be installed to manage all installations and equipment in the station. In turn, the installation of modern security systems – monitoring, access control, burglary and assault alarms and fire alarms – will increase the safety of people and the building itself

The station’s immediate surroundings will also be developed. A small car park with six parking spaces, including two for people with disabilities and two for charging electric cars, as well as a bicycle shelter with a bicycle repair station and a refuse shed will be created next to the building. In addition, the pavement will be resurfaced and the greenery will be tidied up

During the project, the existing station will serve as a passenger service. Once the new building is in place, the existing station will be demolished

The construction of the railway station in Koluszki will cost more than PLN 12 million gross. The investor is Polskie Koleje Państwowe S.A. (Polish State Railways). The contractor for the construction work is a consortium: Wimaks Toczyłowski Hińcza Sp. k. – leader, Wimaks Toczyłowski Dariusz – consortium partner, and the project for the reconstruction of the station was developed by GPVT Pracowania Architektoniczna from Poznań. The planned completion date for the investment is early 2025
