Maria Dokowicz Competition for the Best Master’s Degree at the University of Arts in Poznań

As early as 13 November, we will find out who will win the main prize in the Maria Dokowicz competition for the Best Master’s Degree of the University of Arts in Poznań. A special gala will be held on that day at 7 p.m. in Pavilion 11 – Spire of the Poznań International Fair. The event will be crowned by an exhibition of all the works submitted

The competition aims to select the best master’s degrees in art and design created at UAP in the academic year 2022/23. The theme of this year’s event is ‘Anticipation of Art’

The term anticipation originated in Latin. Anticipo then means to precede, to presume in advance. One will immediately ask whether art precedes or even anticipates reality, or rather chases and imitates it? Probably both answers are reflected in artistic practices and form the image of art. It would then be appropriate to dwell not so much on the questions of trying to define the grammar of art, for there is no such thing, but rather on its experience. The curatorial text states that ‘creative anticipation refers to transcendental, utopian visions of a universal nature’ and that ‘art thus participates in the creation of a future vision of reality’. The organisers of the event firmly believe that this is the case. The reason for this belief is the exhibition of the 43rd edition of the Competition, which is made up of works that can only be created under specific circumstances and exist only under specific conditions. We will not see any simplification, repetition of appearances and superficial aestheticisation in this exhibition. Instead, there is an unconventional gesture driven by courage and drawing its strength from creative intuition. Here we see what has not yet happened. We see the future

In their work, artists are constantly venturing into the unknown. Emotions, feelings, experiences, knowledge, thinking and non-thinking, others; all these categories build not only individual micro-worlds. For they have the universalising power to ask difficult questions, to discover the forgotten, to unearth what is deeply covered, to move and, through intelligent irony, to amuse. Through the power of art, they can solve problems and build this world and create it anew
