Pedestrian and bicycle bridge in Warsaw opens today! The city invites you to a walk

Its opening was announced by the Mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, during a debate between the candidates for the mayor’s office. The pedestrian and cycle bridge is due to open at 6.30pm on Thursday.

The pedestrian and bicycle bridge connected the two banks of the Vistula River. The investment was carried out by Budimex. The first works started in January 2022. The structure has one level and consists of seven reinforced concrete supports. On the left bank, just before the last pillar, the structure widens into two ramps that connect to the pavement at the level of Wybrzeze Kosciuszkowskie.

The architects designed the footbridge in such a way that rest areas are created on the surface. The pedestrian and cycle route is narrower in some places and wider in others. At its narrowest point, the width is 6.9 m and at its widest point it is 16.3 m. The entire structure has been made of steel and coated with a paint that imitates weathering, hence the warm brick colour of the bridge.

In total, the structure is 452m long which means it is 127m longer than the Millennium Bridge in London. The bridge is expected to take six minutes to cross and two minutes to cycle. Residents of Okrzei and Ząbkowska streets will find it easier to reach the historic part of Warsaw.

The design of the footbridge was selected in an international competition held in 2016. At the time, the winning concept was proposed by Schüßler-Plan, the Polish branch of the German design office, and DKFS Architects from London.
