Pole Mokotowskie in a new version. The metamorphosis of one of the largest parks in Warsaw has been completed

Pole Mokotowskie is open again! The modernisation of one of Warsaw’s largest parks has been completed. Thanks to an EU investment, this over 70-hectare area has become even greener and more natural, and residents have gained new places for recreation and leisure.

Pole Mokotowskie Park is fully open for residents again! A huge metamorphosis of one of the largest parks in Warsaw has been completed. The most important element of the investment was the detonation and greening of the large pond and the preparation of a completely new water system in the park, full of vegetation and wildlife. In addition to new plantings, there are even more opportunities for sport and recreation in the renovated park. Friendly places to relax have been created, taking care of the local nature and water bodies.

One of the main changes to the park was the naturalisation of the ponds. Instead of 16,000 square metres of concrete, there is now a new water system with reed vegetation that is not only stunning to look at, but also provides shelter for the animals there. Complicated water purification technology will keep the ecosystem stable, and a closed system of water circulation in the main reservoir will ensure that it is enjoyed by residents all year round. The area around the pond has also become much more attractive – residents can walk there on wooden platforms and bridges or relax on comfortable seats. The new ponds also have a new look. In addition to planting, resting places have also appeared there. The concrete removed from the ponds and crushed was used, among other things, to form the embankments dampening the park from Wawelska Street. The resulting hills were sown with grass.

Even more greenery appeared in the park. Trees planted included silver and broad-leaved lime trees, grey poplar, common rowan and sycamore. Several thousand other plants also arrived: shrubs, perennials, climbers and bulbous plants. Flower meadows have been sown and lawns laid out. The new greenery can be admired, among other places, in the biocenotic and sensory gardens. The first of these was created in the central part of the park, on a reclaimed area of the former MPO base. The hills and basins formed there serve as rain gardens, and a wooden platform meandering among the greenery and a gazebo were created. A sensory garden with djembas, tepees, climbing stones and concrete deckchairs has been created next to the playground in Leszowa Street. In the renovated park, there are even more opportunities for sports. In the inner city area, at the back of the Warsaw University of Technology, an obstacle course for inline skaters has been created. The park also features a new outdoor gym, bicycle racks, a wobbly balance beam or natural elements for recreation, such as stumps for climbing. A new jogging path has been created as part of a civic budget project. Its route runs from Jeff’s restaurant to the water reservoir. A new square with a canopy was also created next to the restaurant itself.

In the central part of Pole Mokotowskie, the area around the fountain underwent a spectacular change, with decorative slabs of labradorite laid. In the southern part of the fountain, a new basin with foggers and seats were created in a style corresponding to the other furniture in the park. New benches and seating platforms have been added to the park, as well as new lanterns and litter bins. Two automatic toilets have been installed. Animals were not forgotten during the investment. Two ponds for four-legged animals were built in the ochocko and downtown parts of the park, and insect hotels were set up in the glades.

The project for the reconstruction of the park was made by the WXCA studio, the contractor was the Inmel company. The investment process was supervised by the Warsaw Greenery Board. The modernisation of Pole Mokotowskie park includes elements covered by a grant under the project ‘Development and arrangement of green areas with recreational elements in the area of Pole Mokotowskie Park, Żeromski Park and Kosmos Gardens Park in Warsaw’, co-financed by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund under the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment 2014-2020.

Pole Mokotowskie is a park complex located in the three districts of Mokotow, Ochota and Śródmieście. Originally, in the 19th century, it was a military training ground located between what was then Warsaw and Mokotow. Subsequently, it was used as an airfield and venue for sporting events and was successively developed, especially on the outskirts, which reduced the open area from about 200 ha to about 70 ha. It was finally incorporated into Warsaw in 1916, during the German occupation, as part of the abolished Mokotow borough. In the second half of the 20th century, its character as a city park was consolidated. It is divided into two unequal parts by the south-oriented Niepodległości Avenue. Since 1988 the park in the area of Pola Mokotowskie has formally been called Józef Piłsudski Park.
