Precious mosaics will once again adorn the Szczecin House of Sports

The Szczecin House of Sports will be built next to the former headquarters. The old mosaics that decorated the interior of the former swimming pool and sports hall will be saved. Work is underway to restore them and display them once again in their new location.

The restoration work has been in progress since mid-January. However, they require precise work. The ceramic mosaic from the small pool and a similar work in the entrance hall are being protected. The individual pieces are being dismantled, catalogued and protected. In the future, they will return to the interior of the already new building.

During the work, a full inventory, measurement and marking of even the smallest element is being carried out. They will then be disinfected, cleaned and repaired. The mosaic in the children’s pool area was designed by Sławomir Lewiński; for the mosaic in the pool lobby, the author could not be identified.

In the case of the sgraffito, which will be protected for the renovation work of the entrance hall, measurements were made, as well as stratigraphic studies to determine the original colour layers. Animprint of the sgraffito, the so-called negative, was also made, which will be helpful at the stage of subsequent works, including cleaning or repairing selected elements, informs the Szczecin Municipal Investments Company.

We wrote about the construction of the Szczecin Sports House in June 2023(read HERE). The plan is to build a modern facility with a swimming pool and sports hall. The former will be 30m long and will be accompanied by lifeguard rooms, toilets and storage. The sports hall will be adapted to modern licensing requirements. It will be larger than the existing one. Thanks to the changes, the hall will be able to host sports games and concerts. The new facility will have boxing rooms and social facilities as well as changing rooms. There will be new stands for the audience.

Elements from the old facility will be incorporated into the new development. These include part of the entrance hall and the mosaic. The whole complex will be adapted to the needs of the disabled, assures the company Szczecińskie Inwestycje Miejskie.

The investment is being carried out under the design and build formula. The cost of the works is more than PLN 109 million gross. Supervision is exercised by the company Szczecińskie Inwestycje Miejskie Sp. z o.o. The investment is covered by a grant of PLN 65 million, which comes from the Strategic Investment Programme. The work is expected to be completed in 2026.
