They built it 40 years ago. The high-rise TC Energy Center

The TC Energy Center skyscraper is located in Houston, USA. Its construction took three years and was completed in 1983. The building is 238 m high, and its elegant form makes it an attractive feature of the city skyline.

The TC Energy Center is an example of postmodern architecture. The skyscraper was designed by the architectural team of Johnson/Burgee Architects and the Kendall/Heaton studio. The building’s height to the roof is 235 m and the total height is 238 m. This translates into 56 storeys. Architect Philip Johnson, who worked on the design of the building, is the first recipient of the Pritzker Prize, the world’s most important architecture award.

In designing the building, the architects drew inspiration from Gothic architecture, hence the division of the building into three parts, which emerge one after the other like towers. This makes the building reminiscent of the Gothic architecture of the Netherlands and its canal houses. Each of the ‘towers’ is crowned with spires. Red granite, steel and glass were used to construct the building. The windows here have been arranged in parallel, giving the building an elegant form. The skyscraper has 32 lifts, which are decorated with wooden panels inside. There is also an art gallery inside, which regularly hosts exhibitions.

For several years, the largest office space has been occupied by TC Energy, so the skyscraper has been operating under the name TC Energy Center since 2019. It was previously named the Bank of America Center. The edifice has also been brought up to modern standards. It is equipped with an automatic system that manages lighting, heating and ventilation.

Although it is not the tallest building in Houston (the tallest is the JPMorgan Chase Tower at 305 m), it can safely be described as an architectural icon of the city.
