Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Hajnówka

The Holy Trinity Orthodox Church is located in Hajnówka. It is one of the youngest Orthodox churches in Poland. Will the object gain the status of a monument? This will be decided by the Provincial Office for the Protection of Monuments in Białystok

The construction of the church began as early as 1973. The design of the building was made by architect Aleksander Grygorowicz, who died in 2023 at the age of almost 100. The architect designed the church as a monumental building with a bold shape. The two-storey block was built on an irregular and asymmetrical plan. Its characteristic elements include a wavy roof line, double chancel and choirs. In front of the building is a free-standing bell tower with a soaring conch

Although the prominent painter Jerzy Nowosielski worked on the design of the church, the interior decoration consists of polychrome paintings by the Greek artist Dmitri Andonopulus. The church was consecrated in its entirety in October 1992, becoming a place of worship for the Hajnówka Orthodox community and an excellent example of a religious building erected in the modernist style, reports the office of the Provincial Office for the Protection of Monuments in Białystok

The interior design of the church proposed by Jerzy Nowosielski did not please the parish priest, so the interior was realised using the idea of Dmitri Andonopulus

The church can hold up to five thousand worshippers, making it one of the largest in the country. The building is well-known for the concerts organised there as part of the ‘Hajnówka’ International Festival of Orthodox Music and the concerts organised as part of the ‘Hajnówka Days of Orthodox Music’ International Festival

At the beginning of October, at the request of the owner of the church, Prof. Małgorzata Dajnowicz – Podlaska Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments – initiated a procedure for entering the building in the Voivodeship Register of Monuments. An inspection has already been carried out at the site. Will the church gain the status of a monument? We will find out soon
