Last Thursday, 7 September, a contract was signed with the contractor for the works that will see the concrete slabs disappear from the site. On that day, the first one was symbolically removed. More greenery was planted in the square as a result of requests made by residents. In the gallery below the article, we publish visualisations of the square after the reconstruction
The Nowy Targ Square in Wrocław was renovated in 2013 according to a design by Roman Rutkowski Architekci. The architect designed the square as an urban living room with benches and deckchairs, where a market was opened seasonally. In the following years, residents’ expectations of public places changed. The people of Wrocław were reluctant to use Nowy Targ Square on hot days. The built-up surface became very hot, creating a so-called urban heat island
To prevent the square from overheating, it was decided to remove some of the concrete slabs and introduce more greenery. After years of waiting, there is finally some good news for residents. The contract with the contractor has been signed and the replacement of the concrete slabs with greenery will begin at the turn of September and October
In total, the investment involves planting 63,000 plants on the square. Today there are 27 trees in the ground and 8 trees in pots. After the changes, 172 trees, 27 thousand perennials, nearly 200 ferns and several thousand grasses will appear there. In addition, 23 thousand bulbous plants and climbers will go into the ground
We are going to green New Market. It is a beautiful, historic space, important for the people of Wrocław. Almost a hectare of land, under which there is a car park. But we want to make a beautiful garden on the roof of this car park and plant thousands of plants. This will make the urban heat island we have here today disappear. In spring we will discover a new green space. The people of Wrocław want more and more greenery and we are making their dreams come true wherever possible. We are betting on a green Wrocław,” stressed Jacek Sutryk, Mayor of Wrocław, just after the signing of the agreement
The square BEFORE the reconstruction
A certain difficulty for the contractor will be the presence of an underground car park under the square. For this reason, it will be necessary to make new technological layers to allow the plants to grow. The pavement will be stripped to a depth of up to 60 cm and replaced by insulation and drainage-retention layers with soil substrate. An automatic irrigation system will be built. In addition, lighting will be upgraded during the works and a special space for food trucks will be created
The redevelopment of the square will cost PLN 10 million. The work will be carried out by the Rotomat company and will last until spring 2024
