New interchange centres in Zabrze opened

Two transfer centres have been opened in Zabrze. The first is located in the city centre on Goethego Street the second in the Rokitnica district on Krakowska Street and Ofiar Katynia Street. These are modern facilities designed to make it easier for residents to get around the city and the region.

The interchange centre in Rokitnica has an area of 276 square metres. In addition to the building and canopy, open platforms and an outdoor car park have been built here. Passengers will be able to wait for the bus and use service facilities. The general contractor for the project is NDI Group, the design was prepared by AN Archi Group studio, and the contract engineer was SWECO.

The new Transfer Centre in Rokitnica occupies an area where there were limited possibilities not only for storing materials, but also for their delivery. This required a great deal of attention to ensure safe working conditions for everyone and to carry out the construction work efficiently. In the final phase of the project, there were about 80 people working on the site,” says Damian Gil, Construction Manager of the Rokitnica Interchange Centre from the NDI Group.

The facility was built quite quickly. Work on the construction began almost exactly a year ago. The architects designed the centre as a lightweight, covered structure. Previously, passengers had to use the usual shelters set up by the platforms, but now they can wait for the bus inside the building instead. The building is constructed in steel and reinforced concrete. An interesting feature is the green roof, which is built to have a positive effect on the microclimate of the site and to reduce the formation of a so-called heat island in summer.

Another is the interchange centre on Goethego Street. This is a much larger facility as it has a usable area of just over 10,000 square metres. The centre has bus platforms, a two-storey car park and a waiting room.

The new transfer centres were built using funding from the European Regional Development Fund under the Regional Operational Programme of the Silesian Voivodeship 2014-2020: “Transfer Centre in Zabrze”. The total value of the task is: pLN 127,732,462.47, of which EU funding amounted to: pLN 95 278 725.03.
