The renovation of the building at 73/77 Przybyszewskiego Street in the Old Bielany district of Warsaw has been completed. The works were subsidised by the Warsaw City Hall. The damaged façade, from which the plaster was falling off, was repaired. Unfortunately, the residents did not enjoy the refreshed building for long. As soon as the scaffolding was removed, vulgar inscriptions appeared on the façade
The renovation of the building at 73/77 Przybyszewskiego Street was carried out with financial support from the city. The capital’s budget allocated PLN 133,000 for this purpose. The façade of the one-storey building with a characteristic high red roof was renovated. The building was designed by Janusz Dzierżawski, and its construction lasted from 1928 to 1930
The renovated building is part of the Zdobycz Robotnicza housing estate (we wrote more about the estate and its history HERE). Today, the building is regarded as an original example of the pre-war, manor house style. Fortunately, the building did not suffer any damage during the Second World War. It was a different story with the façade, which had been deteriorating for decades. Plaster was falling off the outer walls
During the renovation, the plaster was renewed, the cornices and rustication in the corners of the risalits were restored. The flashings were also replaced. However, the residents did not enjoy the renovated façade for long. According to the office of the Capital Conservator of Monuments, moments after the scaffolding was removed, someone wrote on the façade with black paint. Inscriptions appeared in two places. The first is vulgar and the second depicts the crest of a football club. In the photos published here, the inscriptions have been slightly blurred
Against such actions, the City of Warsaw announced in July the launch of the campaign “Together against scribbles”. This type of vandalism not only disfigures our city, but also exposes the housing community to further expenses, nullifies the work of conservationists and architects. City offices and units, NGOs and artists have been involved in the widely planned campaign. We want to educate, which is why classes will soon begin in Warsaw schools to make young people aware of the magnitude of the problem – also in relation to ecology. Because aggressive chemicals and large amounts of water are used to clean the scribbles,” informs the Capital Conservator of Monuments
The inscriptions on the renovated façade of the building on Przybyszewskiego Street will be removed. Hopefully forever
