Former boarding house “Przedwiośnie” in Podkowa Leśna

It is a building located at 21 Parkowa St. The former boarding house “Przedwiośnie” in Podkowa Leśna has been entered in the register of monuments. It is a valuable example of architecture from the interwar period.

The “Przedwiośnie” boarding house was designed by Zbigniew Rzepecki, a graduate of the Lviv Polytechnic and a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice. The guesthouse was built in 1928 and was part of an intensive expansion of Podkowa Leśna. By 1930, one hundred new buildings had been erected in the town, mainly as places of rest for the inhabitants of the capital.

The building initially served as a summer boarding house. Over the following decades it changed owners and today is in the possession of private owners.

The architect proposed a form typical of wooden holiday buildings. It is an eclectic form characterised by the use of elements of manor house and even Zakopane architecture. The villa was built on an irregular plan and decorated with annexes, undercuts and a veranda.

The former boarding house is a valuable relic of the Podkowa Leśna summer house with features of Podhale architecture with elements of Art Nouveau. The building is distinguished by its high architectural values, including individually designed body varied by arcades, verandas and a roof with facades, carefully elaborated wooden architectural detail referring to folk architecture. Theartistic value of the building is further enhanced by varied ornamental motifs,” informs Professor Jakub Lewicki, Mazovian Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments.

Despite the passage of years, the building has been preserved in a very good condition. The original layout of the rooms has been preserved, and the façade is also decorated with the original details. History can also be felt inside – examples include old doors, a staircase, a tiled cooker or wooden floors.

The property also has scientific historical value as a valuable relic of Podkowa Leśna development dating back to the first phase of its dynamic development in the period of the creation of the garden city and a testimony to the summer past of the town. The history of the building also reflects the social and historical transformations affecting the character of Podkowa Leśna,” adds Professor Lewicki.

The building is also a valuable example of compositional and stylistic solutions that were commonly used in the late 1930s in wooden construction.
