NASU SUSHI in Gorzów Wielkopolski. The niches under the viaduct have been transformed into an elegant restaurant.

NASU SUSHI in Gorzów Wielkopolski is an unusual place. The elegant interior by architects from CUDO Studio was created in niches under a railway viaduct. The side walls of the premises, which are the supports of the viaduct, are protected by the conservation officer and cannot be attached in any way. The premises are three alcoves long, but are very narrow, which largely determined the functional layout. See how the architects coped!

NASU SUSHI is located in Gorzów Wielkopolski, in three niches of a recently renovated railway embankment on the banks of the Warta River. A characteristic feature of the premises at this location is that they are very long, but shallow in depth. An additional complication was the conservation guidelines, which forbade the installation of any elements to the side walls and vaults

How does the restoration look inside? The main guideline was, of course, Japanese minimalism, but in a modern way, including in the evening. This is important because NASU SUSHI, is the place where we will both have an excellent lunch during the day and sit down with a drink in the evening. Shou Sugi Ban on the wall coverings, stained oak, black granite and cognac upholstery fabric are the most important motifs of the restaurant’s interior. Completing this palette is, of course, the orange of the brick vaults and the warm hue of the concrete supports – elements that are perfectly in keeping with the wabi sabi philosophy. All the furniture has simple shapes and is made of natural materials, a nod to Japanese furniture craftsmanship that places a premium on simplicity and tradition.

As in the kitchen, there is no room for half-measures in the interior – everything is made using high-quality products. Despite its modern appearance, the entire space creates a very warm atmosphere and is refined down to the smallest detail. Even the cutlery and crockery were specially imported from Asia, so that guests can experience the uniqueness of the place to the full.

The arrangement in each of the three niches is slightly different from the previous one. The first contains the sushi bar, where sushi masters prepare dishes in front of guests’ eyes. It is also the part most suited to evening gatherings over a drink. On either side of the premises are comfortable upholstered sofas, as well as an area with designer chairs by Ukrainian manufacturer Nooma Home.

The central niche houses the heart of the concept, the kitchen. It is partially open, allowing guests to watch the chefs at work. As before, there is also a bar here, but this time it is geared towards the preparation of unique drinks and other beverages.

The third niche offers a space ideal for any event. Its intimate character and looser arrangement make it possible to receive guests during their private parties. An additional advantage is the specially prepared space for the sushi master, who acts as a private chef

What did this project teach us? It certainly taught us patience :) An interior refined to such a great extent is not created in six months. It is a daily struggle against various adversities and joy when we manage to overcome them and take a step forward. Another interesting fact is how the interior changes due to the amount of glazing. Originally, the premises had small window displays, which were replaced with brand-new woodwork. By enlarging the glazing, the whole concept has gained not only additional natural lighting but also a magnificent view of the promenade and the Warta waterfront
