The interior is impressive. Railway station in Szymankowo after reconstruction

The railway station in Szymankowo has been opened after reconstruction. Inside, the old finishing touches have been renewed. Instead of tiles, the walls here are decorated with elegant wood panelling. The doors and windows also now have a historic look.

The railway station in Szymankowo was built in 1909 and is listed in the provincial register of historical monuments. Even before World War II, it was a border station between Poland and the Free City of Gdańsk. It is a historical site – the station was one of the first to be attacked by the Germans on 1 September 1939. The tragic events of that day are recalled by a memorial plaque bearing the names of those murdered. They were mainly railway workers and customs officials.

The railway station is located on the route from Warsaw to Gdańsk, between Malbork and Tczew. For many years, the historic building hid the most valuable details under a thick layer of plaster. During reconstruction, it was possible to recreate the façade to resemble the historic one. In addition, following conservationist recommendations, the panelling and wooden ceilings in the building were renovated. The station gained new windows and doors, whose appearance resembles the historic one. Passengers can now wait for their train in completely different conditions than just a few years ago. There is a ticket office room and toilets.

The building has been adapted to the needs of people with disabilities. The threshold at the front entrance has been removed, railings have been installed at the internal stairs and a ramp for wheelchairs has been built on the platform side.

The railwaymen have also invested in environmentally friendly solutions. These include energy-efficient lighting, a heat pump and a BMS system that controls the installations to optimise electricity, heat and water consumption. A monitoring system has also been installed.

What has changed in front of the building? On the square in front of the station, a car park for people with disabilities, a kiss&ride zone and a shelter with bicycle racks have been created on the platform next to the station. In addition, landscaping elements such as bins and benches have been added.

The total cost of the reconstruction of the railway station in Szymankowo amounted to more than PLN 14.1 million gross. The investor is Polskie Koleje Państwowe S.A. (Polish State Railways), and the contractor for the construction work was 3JM Michał Bryłka from Kwidzyn. The design documentation was prepared by the An Archi Group Sp. z o.o. design studio from Gliwice.
